Hallowell History Mural

October 2, 2018

HORSHAM, PA

Hallowell elementary school is adding some flair into its hallways. Wanting to use the building itself as a teaching tool and with the help of a private donor, a history mural came to life.

The mural started in the Summer of 2017 and is an ongoing project. The mural will slowly add art to it through the years, eventually extending 52 feet when finished.

The theme for the mural was based on the history of both Horsham and Pennsylvania.  The great benefit of using local history as the theme is that 4th-grade students become engaged in Pennsylvania history.

This past school year, teachers and staff thought it would be a great idea to have 4th-grade students draw pictures and give a presentation about their artwork. A small group of judges got together and picked three students to have their art picked and painted onto the wall by artist, Justine Musick. Three students were awarded honorable mention, and one student was picked to have her drawing of the Pennsylvania flower painted on the mural next Summer.

Spaces are left open on the wall for additional artwork to be added to the mural.
