Simmons Read Across America Day

March 4th, 2019

HORSHAM, PA

Read Across America Day is an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association that began in 1977. Schools across the country celebrate the day on the closest school day to March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

Simmons Elementary School celebrated the day by inviting in Horsham community members to read the first chapter of their book of the month to the students. Community members such as the Horsham Police Department, Horsham Librarian, Pennsylvania State Representatives and many more were all there to celebrate the day.

Elisha Gee, Assistant Principal of Simmons Elementary, started a new initiative last school year called, “One School One Book”.  “One School One Book” is an opportunity for all Simmons families to be engaged in reading the same book throughout the month of March. The day kicks off on Read Across America Day with the book of the month being revealed to the whole school during an assembly.

This year Simmons Elementary is reading “The World According to Humphrey”.  A book about a pet hamster that lives in a school. Simmons even got their own pet hamster to live in their library for the month of March.
