Blair Mill Day of Service

May 23rd, 2019

HATBORO, PA

On May 10th, Blair Mill Elementary School held a Day of Service event where the whole school participated in helping others in need. A grant was written to the Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation (HHEF) to help provide the funds for this day. It was approved and supplies were bought to help make the day happen.

One organization that came in to help with the project was The Giving Tree. The Giving Tree is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching children the merits of helping worthwhile causes.

Stations were set up throughout the school so the students could rotate to a new project every 20 minutes. Stations set up were: making cards for the homeless, creating bags with essential items, crafting, and even the local fire department, police and EMT’s were there to teach the kids how they service our community.

The idea for the day all started when Blair Mill partnered with several local non profit organizations during homeroom on Mondays. The homerooms would have to problem solve a issue the organization was having. Day of Service was then created to tie everything into one big event.

Some classes even headed out on a bus to local organizations to help them on site. Hatboro-Horsham Parks and Recreation was one of them. Third grade students went to the park to help clean up trash, and pick up sticks.

The day ended with students watching a video montage from all their hard work they had accomplished that day. Dr. Ryan Thomas, Principal of Blair Mill, wants students to take away no act is too small in helping make a difference.
