Hatboro-Horsham High School hosted its annual FIRST Lego robotics tournament on December 14th. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a company that inspires young people with project-based, hands-on learning programs. FIRST introduces students to coding, programming, and engineering where students work together to solve a yearly robotics challenge.
FIRST has four progression levels so that all grades can compete in this program.
- First Lego League Jr (FLL Jr)- Grades K-4
- First Lego League (FLL)- Grades 4-8
- First Tech Challenge (FTC)- Grades 7-12
- First Robotics Competition (FRC)- Grades 9-12
The FIRST event held at Hatboro-Horsham High School had FLL Jr, FLL, and FTC all compete during the day.
For FLL Jr.their theme was called Boomtown Build. Students imagine and create a safe, healthy, and happy community and develop what FIRST City means to them.
Hatboro-Horsham School District had a team represented from each of the four elementary schools and middle school. Every Lego League team is up to 10 members that apply science, engineering, and math to real-world challenges.
This year’s theme for FLL was called City Shaper. Students will observe how cities and buildings grow, thrive, and change. The student’s goal is to plan a strong, sustainable, and inclusive FIRST city.
For FTC their theme was called SkyStone. As part of their mission, teams overcome obstacles that stand in the path to build a superstructure of the future. Their robot’s goal is to pick up stones and deposit them on the other side of the field.
FIRST allows students to learn important life skills while engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs.
